Exercise 1

1 took: If you take part in an activity, you do it with other people.

2 give: If you give someone a hand, you help them.

3 up: To lock someone up means to put them in prison.

4 pointed: If you point out something, you mention it.

5 up: If you live up to someone’s expectations, you do the things that they expect you to do.

 

Exercise 2

1 entertainment: Entertainment is something such as a performance which entertains people.

2 inhabitants: The inhabitants are the people who live in a place.

3 allergic: If you are allergic to something, you become ill if you come into contact with that thing.

4 generosity: Generosity is the quality of being generous.

5 donation: A donation is an amount of money that you give to help someone else.

 

Exercise 3

1 swollen: If part of your body is swollen, it is bigger than usual because you have injured it.

2 addicted: If you are addicted to something, you cannot stop doing it.

3 inspired: If you are inspired by someone, they make you feel that you want to do something yourself.

4 contestants: The contestants are the people who are taking part in a competition.

5 determined: If you are determined to do something, you want to do it very much and are willing to work hard in order to do it.

Exercise 4

1 was given: We use the passive here because it is the doctor who performed the action, not the subject of the sentence.

2 would: Will changes to would in reported speech.

3 didn’t: We use if only + past simple to talk about a present situation that we are not happy about.

4 taken: We use have something done when someone does something for us.

5 had: We use the past simple in the if clause of second conditional sentences.

 

Exercise 5

1 will have finished: We use the future perfect to talk about an action that will be finished at a particular time in the future.

2 wouldn’t have got: We use would have + past participle in the main clause of third conditional sentences.

3 were invited: We use the passive form of a verb when we don’t know who performed the action of the verb.

4 had already done: Verb forms change one tense back into the past in reported speech.

1 I believe that freedom is very important.: We do not use the definite article when we talk about something in general.
