This CD contains the D-CC and D-C++ Compiler Suites and documentation for
all targets supported by Diab Data. The appropriate files are installed
depending on the language and target selected during installation. Tools
are enabled by license keys delivered separately by e-mail and on printed
instructions shipped with the media.

Browse relnote.htm at the top level of the CD with an HTML browser for
Release Notes for this version.

1. Brief Installation Instructions
==================================

Complete installation instructions are in the "Getting Started and
Overview" manual shipped with every CD.

1a. Installing on UNIX
----------------------

Do
    cd CDROM
    dtools/HOST/install [-d DESTINATION-PATH [-s SOURCE-PATH]

where
    CDROM The CD-ROM device.
HOST One of: AIX3, AIX4, HPUX, MKLINUX, SGI, SUN4, SUNOS
DESTINATION-PATH Root directory for the tools. Defaults to
                            /usr/lib/diab
SOURCE-PATH Root directory containing the tools. Defaults to
'.', the top level of the CD.

1b. Installing on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.x
-----------------------------------------------

Launch D:\dtools\win32\setup.exe where D: is the CD-ROM drive.

1c. Installing on Windows 3.x, Windows NT 3.x, and MS-DOS
---------------------------------------------------------

Run D:\dtools\win16\install -o where D: is the CD-ROM drive.

1d. Installing Acrobat
----------------------

The tools installation does not install Acrobat Reader with Search. If you
do not have Acrobat on your system, you can install it by running the
appropriate installation program for your system as follows:

     - Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.x:
            D:\acrobat\win\rdr_srch\32bit\setup.exe

     - Windows 3.x and Windows NT 3.x:
            D:\acrobat\win\rdr_srch\16bit\setup.exe

     - UNIX:
           /CDROM/acrobat/unix/rdr_srch/install

where the CD-ROM drive is D: for Windows and /CDROM for UNIX.

Note: there are two versions of Acrobat: with Search and without. Acrobat
with Search searches multiple documents using an index and is highly
recommended (the commands above use "rdr_srch" instead of just "reader").

1e. Copying documentation files from CD to hard disk
-----------------------------------------------------

The Windows installation will copy documentation files to hard disk if
requested. If not, and in all cases for UNIX, the files on the CD may be
copied to a hard disk. The HTML files will require about 4 MB and the PDF
files about 7 MB. Unused target files may be deleted as noted below.

We recommend copying the documentation to either your "install_path", e.g.,
../diab, or the "version_path", e.g., ../diab/4.1a.

To copy the HTML documentation:
    copy welcome.htm
    copy data/html/*

To copy the PDF documentation:
    copy welcome.pdf
    copy data/pdf/*

You do not need to copy directories for unused targets, i.e.,

    data/html/ asse<target>, get<target>, link<target> targ<target>
    data/pdf/<target>

Special note for UNIX systems:

The copy from the CD must be made with the CD mounted with lower-case
mapping enabled as described in 3. below.

However, due to a bug in the Adobe programs used to prepare the
full-text search indexes for the Acrobat Reader Search feature, if
(and only if) the Acrobat Reader is to be run on UNIX, then each index
file and its associated directory must be renamed to upper-case after
the copy from CD to disk.

The index files and associated directories are in "data/pdf", e.g.,

After copy As required by Acrobat on UNIX
          ----------------- -------------------------------
cf and cf.pdx CF and CF.PDX
          m68k and m68k.pdx M68K and M68K.PDX
          ... ...

Either "mv" each file and directory to its corresponding upper-case
name individually, or execute the following shell commands (should
     work on most UNIX systems):

          cd <documentation-root>/data/pdf
          for f in *.pdx; do
          > mv $f `echo $f | tr "[a-z]" "[A-Z]"`
          > mv `basename $f .pdx` `basename $f .pdx | tr "[a-z]" "[A-Z]"`
          > done

2. Notes On Using The Documentation
====================================

2a. Viewing HTML documents
--------------------------

Open the file welcome.htm at the top level of the CD with any HTML browser
supporting tables. The HTML documents have been tested with Netscape
Navigator 3.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0. Formatting is better
with Netscape.

Because of limitations in translating graphics to HTML, there may be a loss
of resolution in HTML figures. If you have difficulty viewing the HTML
version of the graphics view the corresponding PDF document with Acrobat
Reader.

2b. Viewing PDF documents
-------------------------

To view the PDF, the installation of Acrobat Reader 3.0 with Search is
required. This CD contains the appropriate Acrobat Reader for your
particular platform. If you do not already have Acrobat installed, please
install Acrobat 3.0 by following the instructions in 2 below.

Launch Acrobat Reader and open welcome.pdf at the top level of the CD.

Note: Acrobat Reader may be run from within an HTML browser. However
because of communications problems between Acrobat Reader and browsers,
including absence of the multi-document full-text search capability, we
strongly recommend that you run Acrobat Reader as a separate application
rather than within a browser.

2c. Searching in PDF
--------------------

Use the Find feature in Acrobat Reader to find words or word phrases in a
single PDF document. To use Find, click the plain Binoculars on the
toolbar, or select Tools > Find.

Use the Search feature to make a full-text search over a set of PDF
documents (for example, over all documents related to pSOS Networking
facilities). To use Search, click the icon showing binoculars overlaid on a
document on the toolbar, or select Tools > Search.

The Search feature requires an index. This CD contains an index for each
target indexing all manuals relevant to that target. When you open a PDF
document, it will open the associated index automatically. However, Reader
may open indexes more than once, and if you open documents for different
targets, will open an index for each target. Either case may cause the same
manual to appear more than once in the search results list.

To select an index for use by the Acrobat Reader Search feature if not
selected automatically, or to remove extra indexes, in the Acrobat Search
dialog displayed when Search is invoked, click Indexes:

     - To add an index, browse to the "data/pdf" directory on the CD and
Select and open any of the files with the ".pdx" extension.

     - To remove an index, select it in the Index Selection window and
       click Remove.

Note: the Search feature requires Acrobat Reader with Search. See the Note
in 1d, "Installing Acrobat," above.

2d. Printing documents
----------------------

For a printed document, we recommend that you use the PDF files, which are
faithful representations of the Diab Data hardcopy manuals. You can,
however, also print an HTML file as an entire chapter or, by highlighting
the desired text with your cursor, print only the selected portion of the
HTML text.

3. Special Instructions for Copying Documentation from CD on UNIX
=================================================================

Due to differences in how UNIX systems interpret the ISO 9660 standard,
UNIX Systems may mount this CD with all upper-case or all lower-case
names. This CD is built to ISO-9660 standards: on the CD all files are
named in upper-case and follow the 8.3 convention. However, because most
UNIX systems mount CDs with lower-case mapping enabled, all links in the
files refer to files in lower case only. To make this CD work correctly, it
must be mounted such that all file names appear in lower- case. This is the
default for SUN and AIX systems. For HP-UX systems, refer to the
instructions next.

3a: For HP-UX systems before version 10.10
------------------------------------------

HP-UX systems before version 10.10 must use the "pfs" package to mount the
CD to get lower-case names. If it is not already on your system it is
available from your HP System Tape or can be downloaded from:
ftp.hp.com/pub/demos/grfxdemos/pfs/pfs.tar.Z

   Step 1: Install PFS
          - Obtain the pfs.tar.Z file as indicated above and copy to
            a temporary directory (say /tmp/pfs).
                 # su root
                 # cd /tmp
                 # mkdir pfs
                 # cd pfs
                   <place pfs.tar.Z> file h...
