A useful and fun day at work
Well, it’s coming up to April 22nd and, for me and many other school children that means a day off school. Why? Well, it’s Take Your Child to Work Day. My friends look at me as if I’m crazy when I tell them I’m looking forward to the day and tell me that it’s for young kids, not teenagers. They say it’s worse than going to school! I disagree.
If any of you haven’t heard of this day, it started back in 1993. At that time, it was called Take Your Daughter to Work Day. The idea was to encourage more girls to think about doing rewarding work rather than the old-fashioned way of thinking that a woman’s place was in the home. They changed the word “daughter” to “child” in 2003, although the overall aim is still the same. Even before the change, some parents were taking both sons and daughters to work.
I started going when I was eight and this year will be the eighth time I have been. My mum was a teacher at the same school I went to so I didn’t go to work with her. I went with my dad who is a journalist. It was great. The office was full of noise and excitement. The other people who worked there were really friendly and gave me sweets and small presents. None of them had children of their own.
