SETTING OFF INTO THE UNKNOWN SHOULDN'T BE AN ORDEAL
A FEW YEARS
back I did a boat test of a 60ft plus yacht out of the Hamble.
The boat felt immense but it was incredibly easy to handle and, as the
broker observed, it was optimised to be handled by a couple. This seemed
fairly staggering but, after sailing it for a few hours double handed, it was
fair to say it was easier to sail than my own 28ft yacht. The brokers' final
comments on the new buyer were, however, telling. He observed that he
was mildly concerned about handing such a huge boat over to a novice
skipper and his wife who were planning to disappear across the Atlantic.
His reservations seemed justifiable. In the event, I think he took the
initiative and threw in a bit of free tuition as part of the sale.
Skip forward to this September and I was kindly invited to attend
Outremer Week at La Grand Motte in France. The event was extremely
well organised and something of a sign of the times at it was a meeting
of prospective owners of Outremer cruising catamarans who were patiently waiting for their boat to be
delivered. While there is nothing unusual about waiting for a new boat to be delivered, what is new and
unusual about Outremer Week was that the company had decided to help customers along the road to
boat ownership with a series of workshops on everything from boat handling through to engine
maintenance and provisioning. It stands in stark contrast to older attitudes to boat sales, whereby once the
boat was handed over and the cash taken, you were pretty much on your own. I have a friend who made a
handsome living out of this very problem for a number of summers in the early 2000s. Basically, she
spotted that an inordinate amount of brand new catamarans were leaving La Rochelle with skippers and
crew who knew worryingly little about how to handle the boat. She therefore set about easing them into
the rigours of cruising a bluewater catamaran by helping them along the Atlantic coast while they got to
know their new boat. She was constantly amazed how little many of these new owners knew about
handling big catamarans. Anyway,

owners a helping hand, but also putting on a very enjoyable event.
