What do I Know?

We know what we don't know
his quotation, one of my favourites,
is widely attributed to George W.
Bush in the aftermath of Donald
Rumsfeld’s famous ‘unknown unknowns’
statement, and while it may be apocryphal
it has subsequently been treated with some
irony by those who haven’t
fi
rst paused to
analyse it. To me it makes perfect sense,
and underlines the reasoning behind the
inclusion of many of the articles we publish
in these pages. We don’t always know what
we don’t know, and it is only by stepping
outside our comfort zones and searching that
we are likely to make any progress towards
a greater clarity. Thus I urge readers, even
though they may think they are unlikely to
learn anything from a specific article to take
a closer look, because – to quote Rumsfeld
in full -
as we know, there are known knowns;
there are things we know we know. We also
know there are known unknowns; that is to
say we know there are some things we do not
know. But there are also unknown unknowns—
the ones we don’t know we don’t know.
Know what I mean? I am in the fortunate
position of attending several modelling
masterclasses a month through the editing
of these pages, as a result of which not only
do I frequently
fi
nd myself knowing things I
didn’t know, but often things I didn’t know I
didn’t know, and that I wouldn’t have known
I didn’t know if I hadn’t read the article. I am
constantly amazed by the innovations and
improvisations practiced by many of our
writers, and my only regret is my increasing
inability to retain useful information for
any significant length of time. Sadly the
editorial consciousness is a swirling mass of
nonsense and trivia, and useful things like
the FS number for Light Gull Gray, or the pin
number for my bank account, take second
place to 1970s advertising jingles, the lyrics
of popular songs that I would never own in
public to having heard, and the names of the
1970 Leeds FA cup squad.
Of course we could simply pull these nuggets
out of context and print them in a list
and save you all the bother, but that’s not
what, in my personal opinion, a magazine
should do. Part of my remit with
SAM
is to
provide a publication that can be read for
entertainment as much as information and
reference, so I do urge you all to plunge into
the unknown, as you are unlikely to know
what you don’t know unless you read what
you don’t read.
