How a photo becomes inspiration
Aircraft enthusiasts and friends of the Bf 109
may certainly know the picture of Ludwig
Franzisket's Bf 109E over Africa escorting a
Junkers Ju 87B. The picture, taken in spring
1941, shows a late Emil of JG27 on the left
above a Ju 87 Stuka over the African mainland.
While many associate the African campaign with
spotted or sand-yellow aircraft as seen until
1943, Ludwig Franzisket's Bf 109E still had the
European standard paint scheme in
RLM65/02/71 at the beginning of the campaign.
In addition, pictures of his machine show that the
yellow engine cowling was painted over on the
top and treated with stains on the sides. Thus
the template for a sub-variant of the Bf 109 with
an interesting camouflage scheme has been
found.
A search through a model kit store can produce
many things, especially in the case of the Tamiya
Bf 109E-4/7. Although the kit, which was first
released in 1998, is not yet an oldie among kits,
it has recently received strong competition in
1/48th scale. With a little initiative, an adequate
model can be created from this kit. In addition,
the use of the Tamiya kit makes it possible to
use the almost forgotten cockpit set from KMC
alongside an eduard set. Reason enough to start
an interesting project from these products and
give them a respectable place in the showcase.
