enew, or upgrade
something good you
already have? It’s a
dilemma many operators
face when looking across
their fleets, be it military,
commercial or not quite
eVTOLs yet – although I expect their time
will come too.
A recent discussion with leading
helicopter lessors pointed out that
operators are very keen to replace their
existing fleets, which, in many cases, are
long overdue. While those they have are
adequate, the need for more technology,
improved availability and reduced fuel
burn is too much to resist. But demand
is often outstripping supply, and although
the OEMs are almost back to pre-
pandemic production levels, the time lost
during that period can’t be recouped.
But while the rotary sector, to the
outsider, appears keen to replace older
fleets wholesale, the combat fighter
market is a different game altogether.
A fighter matures in combat, and an
operational tempo that the UK’s Typhoon
fleet has endured left any doubters
about the aircraft that it’s one of the
most capable platforms out there –
still. So while many in the industry are
already captivated by the ‘fifth-generation
cocoon’, and some are even looking
towards sixth-generation mock-ups at
trade shows, to tweak an old phrase:
“There’s still plenty of fight left in the
Eurofighter Typhoon yet!”
With the likelihood of the Eurofighter
Typhoon taking on the Wild Weasel role
from the Tornado ECRs of the German Air
Force, this looks set to be only the start of
adding a host of additional capabilities to
an already proven platform.
So, in some cases, upgrading and
improving may be the way to go. Either
way, look out for Eurofighters’ stand at
the Paris Air Show; it’s
sure to be as impressive
today as when the
Eurofighter prototype first
flew in March 1994.
