CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
FROM THE AUTHOR
For a while now, I’ve dreamed of playing a role­
playing game about regular people living regular lives.
Someone once made a game based on the
Dallas
television show. Imagine a game like that but even
more regular. You could experience another life but
have the freedom to really take chances and have fun.
Lots of games let you defeat villains and save the
world, but how many let you start your own business or
tell your boss to go to hell. There should definitely be
more games like that, and as the role­playing game
field gets more diverse and mature, there probably will
be.
The real world is a wild place with so much conflict
and drama. It’s crazy that most role­playing games turn
to fantasy and science fiction when there are so many
engaging stories to be told about everyday life. With
that thought, I sat down to make a game about real
people living real lives. However, I didn’t get very far
before deciding to throw in some aliens.
I love aliens. It is fascinating to imagine people from
different planets. How different from us would they be?
How similar? Nothing would make me more excited
than for humans to discover evidence of extraterrestrial
life. Even something like a fossilized alien bacterium
might transform how people thought about life and turn
the world on its head. Aliens are so awesome! I
couldn’t create a role­playing game and not include
them.
So
Xenopolitan
is a role­playing game about aliens
living normal and not­so­normal lives. The characters
in this game are extraterrestrial parents, kids, retail

World War. The player
characters include a spy, a
bomber pilot, a samurai, and a
Neanderthal. Although they
are using a physical tabletop,
virtual and psychic tabletops
are much more common.

workers, social workers, politicians, criminals, and
everything else. They don’t go on adventures. They
don’t fight in wars. They don’t explore forgotten
places. They struggle with real problems and try to
negotiate the real world, which can be as weird and
treacherous as any fantasy or sci­fi setting. I hope that
sounds exciting to you! If not, you’re probably reading
the wrong book, but please don’t stop.

Chapter 1: Introduction
Good news! If you’ve gotten this far, you’ve already
read this chapter. The rest of the book is even better.
Chapter 2: Welcome to Ingress
This is the first of two chapters describing the world of
Xenopolitan.
It provides an overview of Ingress, the
extraterrestrial city that is the heart of the setting.
Chapter 3: People and Places
This chapter describes the notable
organizations, and species of Ingress.

WHAT IS XENOPOLITAN?
Xenopolitan
is a role­playing game set on Earth in the
year 2099. It takes place in Ingress, a city built by
extraterrestrials where aliens and humans live and work
together. Player characters take the role of people in
Ingress. Their stories might be about running a
business, helping their neighbors, getting an education,
becoming mayor, or just earning enough money for
rent.
Xenopolitan
is about the challenges of everyday
life through the sensory organs of an extraterrestrial. It
accommodates many different themes, genres, and
styles of play. Although it is a science fiction game, the
struggles of its characters might not be much different
from those in your own life.
The
Xenopolitan
game system is based on
Fudge,
a
role­playing game that emphasizes simplicity,
flexibility, and speed. The rules gloss over a lot of
minutiae to push the story and character interaction to
the foreground. You don’t have to know anything about
Fudge
to play
Xenopolitan.
Everything you need is
right here. However, this book assumes you are
somewhat familiar with role­playing games and
understand their basic structure.
Chapter 4: Rules
As you probably guessed, this chapter explains the
game rules. Thankfully, there aren’t very many of them.
Chapter 5: Player Characters
This chapter goes through the process of creating
player characters.
Chapter 6: Useful Tools
This chapter includes lists, charts, and other reference
material that might be handy while making characters
or playing the game. It also includes sample characters.
Chapter 7: Game Mastering
This chapter contains story ideas and tips for game
masters. There is also an exciting example of play
about an extraterrestrial band trying to earn fame and
fortune in their local music scene.
The printed word is alive and well in 2099.
This person is reading a scent book where
each word is represented by a different
fragrance. Her species has poor vision but
an extremely sophisticated sense of smell,
so books in this format are a necessity.
