Though collecting chess on stamps as a topical is becoming more
and more popular, another aspect of this thematic is the always inter-
esting collecting of chess cancels on first day covers, souvenir
cards, etc.
The first official cancel known was used by Germany in 1923 at
Borstendorf. Private cancels, club markers and other items have ap-
peared since before the turn of the century.
The number of cancels is approaching 300, some scarce, especially
the early ones and even a few recent ones, but most are moderately
priced and bought by collector, amateur, professional, and even chess
masters! However, it is unfortunate that sometimes an important event
is ignored while many almost unnoticeable tournaments are publicized
through cachets and cancels.
Cancels in the past have commemorated chess clubs, chess masters,
tournaments, chess congresses and chess Olympics. The largest proli-
feration within memory of an event being honored was the 1968 Chess
Olympics in Lugano, Switzerland where FDC's, cancels, covers, cards,
and medals were released. If it weren't for the varied items such as
these, collecting the chess stamps alone would become a very slow
topic.
Naturally several world championship events have been honored by
stamps, cancels,and special stationery as with the recent World Champ-
ionship Match in 1969 whereupon the Russian postal system issued a
nicely cacheted cover and beautiful cancel. Other oddities such as
chess clocks have also appeared on cancels.
As usual, some cancels have been prepared just as finely engraved
stamps are, and others were rush jobs with little or no
Imagination.
But it is honest to say that it is one of the most interesting
you could become acquainted with.
