A Simple RPG Based Upon a Popular Video Game

This simple RPG is based upon a very popular video game. If you have children who know the game, then this can be a great
launching point to get them into tabletop role playing games. It is very much inspired by the works of Grant Howitt
(
https://www.patreon.com/gshowitt
). So, without further ado,
grab your shovel and your dagger, and let’s start
Mining and Making.
Character Creation
Your character is made up of 3 statistics, plus
health and optionally, Experience (Exp.) and
Hunger. Your three statistics are:
Mining:
Digging, chopping, and
gathering materials,
Making:
Transforming your gathered
materials into other things.
Fighting:
Attacking and defending
against other creatures.
Taking Actions
When a character wants to take any action, roll a d6. If the
roll is equal or less than the relative attribute, the
character succeeds. If it is more than the attribute value,
the character fails.
Special Cases
If no attribute is suitable to the task, pick a target
number between 1 and 5 based on the difficulty of the
task.
If the character has an item that will help, roll two d6
and use the lowest to determine success. Multiple
items do not add extra dice.
If the task is more difficult than normal due to some
circumstance, roll two d6 and use the highest to
determine success. Multiple hinderances do not add
more dice.
If the character has both helpers and hinderances, roll
normally regardless of the number of each.
If the character’s final roll
is a 6, they fail with
consequences. This could be a setback, or breaking the
item they used, or some other hardship.
If the character’s final roll
is a 1, they succeed with a
bonus. This could be extra damage, a better-quality
item, more resources gathered, or some other boon.
To determine your stats, start by giving each stat
1 point. Then, each player is given 5 points.
Distribute these points between your three
statistics. You may distribute the points in any
way you like, but no statistic may be more than 5.
Health:
Your health is equal to 3, plus your
Mining, plus your Fighting.
Experience:
This starts at zero.
Inventory:
Roll twice on the following table.

Combat
Determining if you hit in combat is handled like any other
action. Damage is calculated as follows:
Damage = (Fighting Attribute) / 2, rounded up, plus any
damage bonus from the held item.
Subtract the
damage from the creature’s health.
Health
When a character reaches zero, they are dead. Optionally,
you may allow your players to respawn.

Campaign Mode
Sometimes you’ll run a one-shot
adventure that is so much fun, that you
want to keep the story going.
EXP:
Assign EXP rewards to creatures and tasks. Every 25 EXP, the player
may add 1 to one attribute. You may not increase any attribute above a 5.
HUNGER:
Your hunger starts at 0. Earn 1 Hunger for every 5 attribute
checks. You can reduce your hunger by eating food. If your hunger reaches
5, you die.
